In our new kinja.com existence, remember to watermark any photographs you share that you would like to retain ownership of.
Edit by Gamecat235 - Or remember to send a polite request to the staff asking for attribution if they forget to credit you for your IP. =) ( !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! )

I gotta start taking my own pictures of Spiderman to post memes
![]() 05/22/2015 at 12:31 |

I steal most of mine off Google so anyone is free to take majority of them.
![]() 05/22/2015 at 12:40 |

Yeah... I didn’t... Damn it.
also why are we no longer Jalopnik based?
![]() 05/22/2015 at 12:41 |

they disowned us because they’re afraid.
![]() 05/22/2015 at 12:43 |

They say it was because us non-professional bloggers were stealing content without attribution.
![]() 05/22/2015 at 12:43 |

Ah... smart move on their part at least
![]() 05/22/2015 at 12:44 |

Now they can just steal from you!

Doesn’t the EULA state that Gawker retains rights on kinja domains?
![]() 05/22/2015 at 12:45 |
|
If so, that makes watermarks all the more important. Then Gawker Media only has rights on the watermarked mass of pixels.

Is this irony?
![]() 05/22/2015 at 12:47 |

true. “hey thats our picture, our agreement says so.”
“okay cool, run with it watermarked...my website is ready”
![]() 05/22/2015 at 12:47 |

Because the io9 editor didn’t do his job.
![]() 05/22/2015 at 13:38 |

They used your photo and didn't give you credit?!
![]() 05/22/2015 at 13:39 |

Happenstance.

I am now in need of cookies...

Whelp... Now it’s time to start a petition against reading any of Orlove’s articles ever again. Then somebody will no longer be a “professional”. I’ve always hated watermarks because, if people are civil and decent, there wouldn’t be a need for it. It’s a constant reminder that ‘some assholes will try to steal this if I don’t put this on here’.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
![]() 05/22/2015 at 14:55 |

Yep
![]() 05/22/2015 at 15:22 |

Well shit man. I honestly didn’t expect that from any of the editors at Jalopnik. Even Orlove. I for one won’t be reading Jalopnik anymore. That’s low.

Send Travis (or Raph) a message, just asking to either take down the image or attribute credit. You retain this right regardless of where you posted it or not. There is a tool which is built into Kinja for instant attribution (sharing the post) as well as the ability to link to the original.
I’m sure that with a politely worded request they’ll modify the post. Asking for credit isn’t wrong. It’s your picture, and your IP.

Email sent. Thanks Gamecat!
![]() 05/22/2015 at 16:14 |

Update: 30 seconds after I sent it I got a response from Travis who said he was taking care of it. Props to him.

Yes.
![]() 05/22/2015 at 16:22 |

Cool. I figured they would. It’s minor in the grand scheme, but staying polite gets you a lot further, a lot faster, and with no after-effects. =)
Glad to hear that they responded.

The TOU states two things:
1. All IP remains yours.
2. Kinja and it’s licensed agents can reuse / modify / transform any posted material.
Asking to be credited for your IP is not outside of either of these cases. While they can use it for their commercial (and non-commercial) ventures, they can’t restrict you re-using it elsewhere or deny a request for proper credit. Though I would guess you would have to remove the IP yourself, and then request that they take it down if that was your request. But yes, watermarks would be the best method to enforce this from the start.

and yet, oppositelock.jalopnik.com still redirects to oppo.kinja.com
